The "National Campaign for Air Pollution Reduction in Lebanon through Efficient Energy Use in Land Transportation"
Background
IPTEC Launched this campaign to raise awareness about air pollution reduction and efficient energy use in land transportation.
Partners
The project is supported by:
- The Ministry of Environment (MoE)
- The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)
- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
- Partners from the private and public sectors
Key data
According to the MOE’s 2nd National Communication to the UNFCCC, published in 2011, the land transport sector contributed to 29% of the total CO2 energy related emissions and 22% of the total GHG emissions back in 2000. This is significant. With more cars, trucks, and other vehicles on the road now, this means this campaign is especially important for the well-being and health of the community.
Overview
The “National Campaign for Air Pollution Reduction in Lebanon through Efficient Energy Use in Land Transportation” is an initiative led by IPTEC with the support of several partners and sponsors.
The project is making a difference by tackling this issue on several levels:
- Increasing public awareness about air pollution reduction and efficient energy use in land transportation (exploring issues from eco-driving to vehicle maintenance and cleaner fuels)
- Creating publications that promote sustainable energy use in the transport sector and highlight air pollution reduction in Lebanon (these publications are distributed at seminars, vehicle inspection centers, private bus companies, IPT stations, etc.)
- Launching communication campaigns that target the general public and engage them in practices that reduce their air pollution footprint
- Organizing capacity building workshops and seminars delivered by energy and transport experts to reach out to professionals and decision makers in the land transport sector and oil and gas sector
- Engaging in research in air pollution reduction and energy efficiency in the land transport sector conducted in close collaboration with academia
- Lobbying for legislation and regulations that will improve air quality in Lebanon
