IPTEC & UNDP Launching the 2nd Edition of the Energy Awareness Awards (EAA 2018-2019)

The 2nd edition of the Energy Awareness Awards was launched on Tuesday March 13, 2018, at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, in the framework of the Lebanese National Energy Conference. The event brought together key figures in the Sustainable Energy sector, including the Minister of Energy and Water H.E. Mr. Cesar Abi Khalil, Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Lebanon, President of IPT Energy Center (IPTEC), Dr. Toni Issa, and Mr. Edgar Chehab, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative to discuss and present challenges and solutions in an attempt to achieve and implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards sustainable environmental growth and development.

The Energy Awareness Awards (EAA) worked and will continue to be a benchmark report that backs businesses and individuals who have invested resources in sustainable energy, while focusing specifically on sustainability, renewable energy, and energy efficiency and conservation.

The introduction of such an initiative, in a collective effort between UNDP, IPTEC, along with experts in the field prioritizes sustainable goals. The project feeds into national joint efforts to advance and address environmental challenges to achieve 12% renewable energy by 2020, and 15% by 2030, and 3-10% Energy Efficiency by 2030. The Energy Awareness Awards will serve as an example that illustrates the Lebanese incentive for businesses, NGOs, and individuals, quoting IPTEC President, Dr. Toni Issa:

"Through the launch of the second edition of the Energy Awareness Awards, we aim to highlight and support the efforts of companies and institutions in the public and private sectors, including companies, universities, vocational schools and municipalities, to promote the concept of sustainable consumption of energy resources and encourage the adoption of structural measures within these Institutions in energy sustainability and environmental performance improvement".

Following the successful results of the first edition the organizers highlighted that there is more to showcase, mostly when it comes to the 7th and 13th sustainable development goals focused on healthy and sustainable environment for all. Accordingly, engaging in sustainable practices and putting environmental considerations at the top of our structure, along with the private sector, academics, youth and the public sector, is only a way of moving forward. Therefore, the eligible categories for the second edition of the Energy Awareness Awards are Private Sector Initiatives, Academia, Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Local Government initiatives that fall within the themes of Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Mitigation of Climate Change, Innovation in Energy and Integrated Category.
