The Eco-Driver Awareness Campaign

Background
As part of the National Campaign for Air Pollution Reduction in Lebanon through Efficient Energy Use in Land Transportation, IPTEC launched the Eco-Driver awareness campaign to promote practices that reduce fuel consumption and the level of pollutants emitted while driving. The campaign was launched on 15 September 2014 at a press conference under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Mr. Mohamad Al Mashnouk and in the presence of Ms. Aline Lahoud ambassador of the campaign. The conference was followed by a visit to IPT’s Dekwaneh gas station in Beirut where a roadshow was organized alongside Virgin Radio Lebanon. Dr. Toni Issa (President of IPTEC) and the Minister of Environment, Mr. Mohamad Al Mashnouk, were both present.

Making a difference by reaching out to many
After the launch, the campaign came to life through weekly activations at most IPT stations across Lebanon where Eco-leaf & Pollumonster mascots got in touch with passer-byes to explain to them the benefits of eco-driving and distribute the campaign's eco-driving license. This ensures that the central message reaches as many Lebanese drivers as possible. IPTEC is also using online activations on social media to engage the youth via online games and discussions that increase awareness.

Real impact
This campaign is really gaining momentum and is getting more people thinking about their role in lessening the impact on the environment. It also highlights the central role IPTEC plays in engaging the community. Read More

The "National Campaign for Air Pollution Reduction in Lebanon through Efficient Energy Use in Land Transportation"

Background
IPTEC Launched this campaign to raise awareness about air pollution reduction and efficient energy use in land transportation.

Partners
The project is supported by:
  • The Ministry of Environment (MoE)
  • The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA)
  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
  • Partners from the private and public sectors

Key data
According to the MOE’s 2nd National Communication to the UNFCCC, published in 2011, the land transport sector contributed to 29% of the total CO2 energy related emissions and 22% of the total GHG emissions back in 2000. This is significant. With more cars, trucks, and other vehicles on the road now, this means this campaign is especially important for the well-being and health of the community.

Overview
The “National Campaign for Air Pollution Reduction in Lebanon through Efficient Energy Use in Land Transportation” is an initiative led by IPTEC with the support of several partners and sponsors.

The project is making a difference by tackling this issue on several levels:
  • Increasing public awareness about air pollution reduction and efficient energy use in land transportation (exploring issues from eco-driving to vehicle maintenance and cleaner fuels)
  • Creating publications that promote sustainable energy use in the transport sector and highlight air pollution reduction in Lebanon (these publications are distributed at seminars, vehicle inspection centers, private bus companies, IPT stations, etc.)
  • Launching communication campaigns that target the general public and engage them in practices that reduce their air pollution footprint
  • Organizing capacity building workshops and seminars delivered by energy and transport experts to reach out to professionals and decision makers in the land transport sector and oil and gas sector
  • Engaging in research in air pollution reduction and energy efficiency in the land transport sector conducted in close collaboration with academia
  • Lobbying for legislation and regulations that will improve air quality in Lebanon

Real impact
This successful campaign is testament to IPTEC’s noteworthy effort to improve people’s lives and health while safeguarding the environment. Read More
